Advocating For Your Local Library

What’s at Stake for Wisconsin Libraries?

Recent federal actions affecting the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) put library services and funding at risk nationwide—including in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin received about $3.2 million in IMLS-related funding in 2024. These funds support statewide services and local library programs.

What happened

March 14, 2025
The President signed an executive order that targeted IMLS operations, raising concerns about the agency’s ability to carry out its work.

March 31, 2025
IMLS employees were placed on administrative leave and access to work systems was suspended. Leadership changes followed, and many expect library funding and support to be disrupted.

Through September 2025
IMLS funding is currently tied to federal appropriations through September 2025, creating uncertainty for services beyond that point.

IMLS is a small federal agency (about 70–75 staff) that provides grants and support to libraries and museums.

Why this matters in Wisconsin

  • Statewide library services and programs rely on federal support to reach communities.
  • Disruptions at IMLS may delay or halt grant administration and technical support.
  • Rural and small libraries can be hit especially hard when shared services lose funding.

How to help

  • Write a postcard to your legislators — we’ll even send it for you!
  • Call your representatives and express your support for IMLS library funding.
  • Record a short video story about why libraries matter to you and submit it to Wisconsin DPI: tinyurl.com/bdhtjmpj
